or against an economical system with the broad market penetration of Neo-Geo. I believe that's why some major manufacturers are interested in putting their games out as titles for our system." SNK may be ready to announce specific agreements with other factories by this fall's AMOA Expo, Barone added.
Additional new ideas to expand SNK's hardware base on the U.S. market are still under development. SNK is exploring a variety of fac
tory-supplier relationships and arrangements, brainstorming with distribution to rethink and strengthen its role, and test-marketing NeoGeo cabinets with a "very famous" restaurant chain.
COMMITTED TO COIN-OP
SNK recently moved its coin-op offices from the San Francisco Bay area to Torrance, Calif. (just 20 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport). The new facility, con
solidating the separate SNK home and coin-op corporations under a single roof, became operational Feb. 17. With 15,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space (plus loading docks) and 5,000 sq. ft. of offices, the firm's new home is clean, modern and spacious.
"Our chairman has always been committed to coin-op," said John Barone. "True, like everybody else SNK made a lot of money with the Nintendo home system a couple of years ago, but that's basically over. Today we're aware that coin-op product needs to be a half-step ahead of consumer in order to be successful. Arcades and street stops are profit centers that we will keep paying great attention to. We've been coin-op built and remain coinop driven to this day."
SNK'S COIN-OP TEAM
At the firm's new site is Marty Kitazawa, who is the president of SNK Corp. of America, as well as president of SNK Home Entertainment. Running day-to-day coin-op business is Senior VP John Barone, with Susan Jarocki as product & marketing manager. Susan's assistant, newly promoted to this task on April 1, is Dietra Charles. Taro Yamaguchi heads up Latin American sales, assisted by Elida Davalos. VP of Administration is Taka Ogura, while Tommy Lynn and Tony Archuleta take care of the busy service department.
Some of SNK's most important coin-op staff aren't in Torrance (at least, not yet). National sales manager Tracy Tate is working out of a Bay Area office, but will relocate to the new Torrance facility later this year, probably in July. Working permanently at a regional site is Jim Chapman, who reps SNK for the East Coast from his Chicago office. Remaining in the Bay Area (on a consultation basis) is Neal Zook, who originally helped John Barone design the Neo-Geo system cabinet. These days, Neal oversees Neo-Geo cabinet construction at 3-Koam and lends a hand on special projects when needed.
SNK Corp. of America is located at 20603 Earl St., Torrance, CA 90503. Phone is 310/371-7100. The fax is 210/371-0969.
