TAITO did not have a booth of its own, but showed its latest video title in the Williams/Bally-Midway booth. (WMS shows its stuff in Taito's booth at some Asian shows, or used to.) Landing Gear is an upright with jet flying theme, featuring rather blocky objects but convincing depth via 3D polygon graphics. You guide your fighter jet in for a challenging landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. ..after blasting the skies clear of bad guys, naturally.

TECMO is getting back into the coin-op video fray with Dead or Alive, a fighting game featuring 3D polygon graphics, courtesy of Model 2 technology licensed from Sega. Martial arts fighters do their kicks, spins, jumps and punches against highly realistic-looking traditional Japanese backgrounds. About 40% done at the show, it ships in kit and dedicated formats by June or July ... and Tecmo plans to follow up with more Model 2based videos.

SNK introduced a wealth of new titles for their Neo-Geo system. Roster includes the tank game Metal Slug, the soccerthemed Fusal, a driver called Over the Top, three new puzzle games and more. They're also getting rather good test results from Turf Masters Golf, they say.

WILLIAMS entered the multi-game, touchscreen countertop market with Touchmaster, featuring a cabinet that's beautifully designed both in terms of appearance and clean, neat finctionality for operators. Some showgoers were a bit confused by the unusual interface (the screen reacts when you pull your finger away, not when you first touch it). But the licensed Ripley's Believe It or Not offers built-in name recognition for a trivia game, one of the nine different games on the menu. The others include cards, basketball, word puzzles, etc. It ships this month.
