E3 2006: CAPCOM in FOCUS
The E3 3G's. Girls (or Guys if you're a Girl), Games and Goodies!!
It's quite fasincating for us to think how much has changed since we first attended E3 back in 1995. Compared to today, the booths were bland with booth babes back then 'tricked' out in uh, business suits, something that is hard to imagine seeing what we see today. Despite the pre-E3 rumors of the E3 Group tightening down and the possibility of handing out fines for indecent booth babe exposure, the skin was still in and the show held it's glitz and glamour of previous years with the babes looking better than ever.

Yalls best pick up this call!
So for the nerds that weren't attracted to the girls (unless you're a girl/lady/female and don't like the alike), there were the goodies. Goodies or swag (freebies) as some know it consisted from magazines, flyers, toys, toys and more toys, Pac-Man key chains (my bag was FULL of them as it is my favorite game), posters, t-shirts, bags, mobile gaming phones (Nokia), yeah, lots of SWAGGIES. It's silly, but there are people who attend this show primarily for this, later to see these freebies on Ebay....sad.
For the third G, it's all about the games and that's what we focus on (at least one of our eyes while the other one glances over at the girls).
First up, let's talk Capcom. From the first E3 in 1995 to the most recent, Capcom themselves have worked hard to draw it's image as a one trick pony, riding away from what had brought them to a third party powerhouse developer through the Street Fighter franchise to a more respected and above all, well-rounded producer of a variety of games. Capcom was quite aware that after the late '90's crash of fighting games that they'd either re-establish themselves or seek hard times as many other companies have already faced in the past 10 years. Despite many of their earlier efforts in Dino Crisis and even the popular Resident Evil series, these games still didn't fully utilize a real 3-D environment which portrayed their skills in games more in the 2-D arena, hence their forte as many fans still believed, was in fighting games.
Fast forward to 2005. For the decade prior, many events occurred that has changed the way we think of the Capcom brand name. Despite what Capcom hard core fans have demanded (mostly being fighting games) they did what was best for themselves.
The best thing that Capcom did in the last 10 years was what they didn't do....develop new fighting games. In doing this, it gave them time to develop new franchises and capture a new, wider audience, hence having multiple sources of income throughout the year. Today, even though the Street Fighter franchise still rings in their name, their we see Capcom as a multi-dimensional, fully rounded video game developer, for both 2-D and 3-D games. Say no more, let's check out some of the highlights of Capcom's E3 2006 Line-up.
Capcom's 2006 Lineup:

Capcom E3 2006 Screenshot Gallery
At E3 2006, Capcom did an incredible job on two notable titles, both as you may have guessed are 3-D based.
Lost Planet

As you can see from the images above, the light shading, sourcing is incredible, but like any great game, the gameplay is what separates one from another and Lost Planet delivers with the quality that we would expect from Capcom. This game is a winner in the US Market and if Microsoft could get their act together in Japan, maybe they might sell a few copies over there too.
From Capcom's Press Release:
"In Lost Planet, human snow pirates navigate VS (Vital Suits) through hostile ice-covered environments, fighting against the indigenous Akrid creatures for the precious thermal energy they need to survive. For one such pilot named Wayne, death almost seemed imminent until he was fortunately rescued. However, he can only remember a few fragments of his past including the slaying of his father by the monstrous beings. Yet under the veil of ice, a devious plan has been set into motion by the Neo Venus Construction Corporation (NEVEC) who plans to sterilize the world of all Akrid and snow pirates alike. What really happened to Wayne? Who is behind NEVEC and why are they plotting this destructive scheme that could potentially annihilate human kind? Encounter valuable allies and dangerous enemies on Wayne’s search for the truth."
Dead Rising

Capcom must have a thing for monsters and zombies. From Ghouls 'n Ghosts, A Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, well, we get more and while Dead Rising isn't as graphically appealing as Lost World, what impressed us the most is the hoards of zombies attacking you at one time. With the limited processing power of the older console systems, the feel of actually being chased after by your enemies was never scarier than ever before. With tons of zombies literally hovering and piling on you (see screens), you'll definitely leave the lights on while playing this game at night. One word, we've finally reached the point in home console processing power that can handle all this many dead people at one time. Lovely, time for a V8, cheers. Hey, that Brad guy looks a lot like Barry Bonds.
Dead Rising certainly gives you the feeling you had in Resident Evil 4 when you knew their was a zombie chasing after you (even though you couldn't see it), but mutiply this by many times over. Luckily there was enough ambient noise from all the other games that this one didn't give us the creeps. Live the horror flick, Dead Rising.
From Capcom's Press Release:
"Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened."

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology Screenshot Gallery
Months ago, when Capcom broke news of a Street Fighter Alpha Compilation we had mixed emotions. The good news: It's an Alpha Compilation! and it was supposedly 'Arcade Perfect.' The bad news: A PS2 release only with no on-line versus capability. Thumbs down!! So after losing months of sleep, we finally got over it and accepted the fact that the Alpha series, while considered by many fighting game experts as one of the best SF games ever made, it still wasn't popular enough for Capcom to justify and put huge sums of money to program and tweak each Alpha to have the LIVE feature. So Capcom is just being cautious these days of what to invest their money into, because all in all, it is about making a profit to bring out more games for it's fans is it not? It's a hard fact to suck it all in, but it's business. We at least came to the conclusion that this is by far the best port Capcom has made for it's Alpha series. Some speculate that certain Alphas are rips of the PSOne version; however, we found this not entirely true.
Whether the ports are 'arcade perfect' or not, we definitely needed more testing, but there certainly were times when we felt a projectile didn't make contact when it should of. If you're not a seasoned Alpha fan, well, consider this the best port of the Alpha series.
To make up for the LIVE-less Anthology, Capcom added some Easter Eggs in Alpha 3 and Pocket Fighters. They call these features as 'Extra Options' in Alpha 3, 'Secret Options' in Pocket Fighters. An example of some of these options allow you to turn on unlimited taunts (in the Arcade Version you can only do this once per round), toggling ground and air guards on/off, etc. In the beta version of SFAA, there were settings, similar to dip switch settings one would find in an arcade board where the user and change the number sequences ('1' or '0') to activate certain features that cannot be chosen normally through the options screen. Such features consist of allowing the user to do other impossible combos in a normal setting (without the assistance of any of the ISM's); i.e. Jump in Fierce Punch, Roundhouse Kick, Sonic Kick (with Charlie). Other neat features this allowed was for the players to use any fighter in vs. mode from any Alpha series (similar to that of SF Anniversary Edition).
Whether Capcom decides to leave these features in the final production is unknown at this time. These dip settings were used by the game testers to analyze and balance out the game before final release, so we'll see if these custom settings will make it's way once it hits store shelves. The way we see it, leave it in and let the user decide.
Can Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts save the PSP?

Unless you've roomed with Bin Laden in a cave the past few years, you'll know that Sony's PSP hasn't been surviving because of it's software. Whether Sony intended it's marketing campaign for the PSP as a all-in-one portable multimedia system due to it's lack of superior software, one thing we know for sure is, if they marketed it any other way it would be dead today. Having the PSP ride on UMD movies alone helps, but first and foremost, the PSP is viewed by the majority as gaming system.
Back in the early days of the Super Nintendo, some of you may remember that Nintendo was getting their a**es handed to them by Sega's Genesis system...until Capcom stepped in. And oh did they step in a big way. The title that saved and took the Super Nintendo to record numbers was none other than the arcade port of Street Fighter II: The World Warriors. The rest is history.
Today, we see a similar scenario, certainly not as big as what SFII did for SNES, but Capcom is making some noise with it's completely redone from the ground up, Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the PSP. This version was programmed specifically from scratch, dedicated to harness the power of what the PSP has to offer and with it's widescreen LCD UGnG optimizes the side scrolling experience beyond any levels we've experienced previously. With our play tests at E3, we surely weren't disappointed. This game is complete insanity in all categories, graphics, sound effects, gameplay. With new power ups, armored suits, gigantic bosses, we're talking everything is new and so much more dynamic, uh, we're going nuts all over again for the Ghouls 'n Ghosts franchise.
Hopefully Capcom doesn't under produce this game because whatever the numbers they expect to reach, it WILL sell out.
Ultimate Ghouls 'n Ghosts Pix Gallery
Closing Thoughts for Capcom
Like many other software developers out there, Capcom is making a transition in between the old and next-gen systems. What Capcom had to show at E3 didn't blow most of it's fans away in terms of a 'surprise' game, but what they displayed with Dead Rising and Lost Planet shows how far along they've come from their Street Fighter days. To the disappointment of it's hardcore fighting game fans, no longer would we expect to see screens upon screens of 2-D beat 'em ups or versus fighting games, but then again, if they continually pursued this, they simply wouldn't be around. It is very difficult for any company, especially one as large as Capcom to evolve into a diversified gaming company, as it takes a lot of sacrificies (such as layoffs and internal restructuring), but it's certainly paid off for them as they've stayed in the black (in profit) for the past year.
With it's current line up of games, it should carry them over until at least September when they announce their big titles at the Tokyo Game Show.
Capcom knows too well that it's fans are dying for their next great 2-D Fighter. We know for certain there will be no Capcom vs. SNK 3 in the near future (as the contract between the two companies has not been renewed or does not allow production of another versus fighter). SF4? It's inevitable, as it doesn't take a genius to figure this one out. Late 2007 - Early 2008 is the rumor. How about another versus fighter? (see below) All we really ask is Capcom to focus all of it's energy and time on a NEW fighting game and spend LESS time on games like Hyper Street Fighter for the Xbox. Virtual quarters? Waiting in line? I hate lines and certainly don't want to watch a game that is so limited in technique that it puts me to sleep (I might miss my turn). Please skip the margarine and get us the butter. We're waiting!!
NON-E3 CAPCOM NEWS

Note: Logo Above is NOT Official.
In non-related E3 news, we heard some buzz from Capcom a deal with DC that was close to completion (as of April 2006). In the original agreement, the first planned game was to be none other than DC vs. Street Fighter. At this point though, the licensing hasn't been finalized and we aren't sure whether this it's at a halt or is still in the works. We confirmed this news with both sides, Capcom and DC and discussions between the two was/is in the works. We really, really hope this game comes out, because as much as we love Marvel characters, DC characters are our favorites. Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, yeah, this would be awesome.
We reported two years ago that Capcom was planning on a DC vs. Marvel vs. Capcom and as we know today, this won't happen only because of the complexity in the legalities between not two, but three companies. Yes, it all comes down to money and the royalties that Marvel charges now because of it's current high demanded IP's, it's not as profitable as it once was.
In more non-related E3 news, we finally discovered from Marvel reps. the reasoning of why there was no X-Live feature in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the Xbox. Marvel at the time wasn't too familiar with how the Xbox Live online service worked and thought that Capcom was going to make residual income off each game played online, hence they wanted royalties based off how many times a gamer would go online for battle. We suspect that there's more to it than this, but this was how the Marvel representative interpreted reasoning of why the deal fell through.
Next up, JAMMA 44th AM Show in September 2006, Tokyo, Japan. In the same month, Tokyo Game Show 2006. We'll be there for both shows and have a full report and hopefully videos also.

I think they should make Marvel vs DC, Because I think that that are way bigger rivals than street fighter and snk. i mean don't get me wrong, I love street fighter, but I'm not too fond of SNK.

Dc.vs capcom, i'll be the best game ever since capcom fought with marvel at the vs. series over the years, and capcom fought with snk. y'know it would be better though if it be a Marvel Vs. Capcom Vs. DC. Vs. SNK game. four of the top companies collide to see which fighter, hero, or villian will reign supreme for his/her company. picture this: superman vs. ryu, spiderman vs. kyo, akuma vs. brainiac, rugal vs. luthor and the list goes on.it would nice if there gonna be a sf4 game in the future also a capcom vs. snk 3 game, a marvel vs. capcom 3 game A DC. vs. SNK game. i mean c'mon it'll be sweet if y'all make it happen. two of the top comics brands plus two of the top fighting brands head to head. it's all about the bragging rights. c'mon capcom do what you got to do to make things work.

Woah, woah, woah! Calm down people, calm down. i personally think its friggin awsome that a new capcom fighting game is in the works, regardless of it's orientation. When I heard about DC superheroes being in the mix, I honestly geeked out. I can't see any realistic reason for you guys to be so hostile. "This is supposed to be a happy occassion. Lets not waste time argueing about 'who killed who'..."

DC VS Capcom would be good. The inclusion of Powerstone characters would be awesome, There are very few characters from Street Fighter that I would like to see included. a quick list of characters from SF I think must be inluded Ryu Chun Li Oro Gill BLANKA Urien As for other Capcom fighters, well maybe a few from Darkstalkers. They have a lot of cool characters they could work in from other games, IF they bring a resident Evil Character it should be Nemesis or Tyrant, not some dork from STARS.

Dead Rising is gonna be sick!!!! I cant wait for it to be relesed. And it comes out next week too. Mine is already payed for but yea, looking forward to it. DC vs Capcom would be ok i guess, dont know that many DC characters so yea, besides batman and superman of course ha ha ha but who cares hm? I sure wouldnt mind some more cross-overs. And since DC is more um.... dark, than other comics out there, i suspect something a lil more in depth with that versus game than marvel versus capcom 2's funky jazz music which did get a lil annoying after a while and lets not forget "i wanna take you for a ride". Think ill just kill myself after i hear that again...

well if Capcom does this and keeps up to their old tricks, they will probably start with Street fighter Vs DC then release sequels like Street fighter Vs DC 2 and then Capcom vs DC.. just like they went from X-MEN all the way to Marvel vs Capcom.

come on, man. Street Fighter AGAIN? I love capcom to death but i'm seriously getting sick of the same crap over and over and over again. capcom has found ways to re-release street fighter so much that they just need to give up. they screwed up when they traded in Capcom Fighting All-Stars for Capcom Fighting Evolution. They cut and pasted a Ps2 version of ryu from Capcom vs SNK2 and then did the same for the darkstalkers from the PS1. how horrible a game that was. capcom needs to expand their field--the only good examples of this are found in marvel vs capcom 1 & 2 and capcom vs SNK 2 where they had everything from rival schools, megaman, darkstalkers, cyberbots, strider, forgotten worlds, resident evil, captain commando, and so much more. it really pissed me off that there was a game called Capcom vs. SNK but the "Capcom" side of the game was really just Street Fighter. isn't anyone else seriously getting tired of playing as the same street fighter 2 and alpha characters over and over and over again?? And all the while, SNK is KILLIN' the 2D fighter scene with classics like King of FIghters 94 Rebout, King of Fighters 2006, King of Fighters XI, NeoGeo Battle Collisium (Capcom needs to learn from this game), Samurai Showdown V Special, and KOF NeoWave. And what's capcom's latest 2d fighter called? Um, street fighter. the SAME ONE. and no matter how many new ideas they get for crossovers, they're gonna keep using street fighter2. Nope, never any new characters, and nope, never any new characters from other capcom video games. and NO, as of yet, no new sequels. no rival schools 3. no star gladiator 3. no MvC 3. No CvS 3. No Power Stone 3. Come on, GET IT TOGETHER CAPCOM! I LOVE YOU BUT YOU'RE KILLING ME OVER HERE! Don't let this new DC/Capcom crossover turn out to be just another strictly street fighter game, okay? quit acting like street fighter is the only 2D fighter you guys ever released and put more diverse characters in these 2d fighting games of yours, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get a megaman robot master like tengu man, or get bionic commando, or get Bass, or get Leon from resident evil, or get raven from Beat Down, or get falcon and wang tang from power stone, or haggar from final fight, please!! but stop limiting yourselves to street fighter and ONLY street fighter! everyone loves street fighter but you guys are overdoing it and soon NOBODY'S gonna like it anymore if you keep it up, capcom. it doesn't matter to me who you cross over with...in fact i think fighting DC is an awesome idea. but not with just street fighter. if so, i may not even play it unless somebody makes me. i never thought i'd say this, but...take some lessons from SNK. they're characters at least LOOK more like "street fighters" then the actual capcom street fighters do! they look like professional fighters, not street fighters...ever notice that? C'mon, Capcom, don't let me down! You're the 2D fighting king! Be as imaginative as you were with the four Marvel vs Capcom games!

As i already said once, the idea is interesting, and dont please forget, that all started(if we doesnt count with X-men cota) in x-men vs STREET FIGHTER, later msh vs street fighter, and mvc 1 and 2 we have to thanks god that its not just Justice league vs street fighter, and as i said before, hope it will be 2d in vs style(i dont like cvs, but loves mvc and alpha styles)

DC vs Street Fighter is by far the coolest idea I've heard for Capcom in years! It should play just like MVC 2 with some improvements. This would really stick it to Marvel! I love Marvel characters and all but they are the reason that no MVC 3 has been made. I hope if this game ends up being made capcom will be smart enough to include other Capcom fighters.

I agree with capcom updating their sprites (morrigan 1993 sprites are getting way too tiring to look at), But Capcom vs DC still sounds awesome. C'mon Batman vs akuma? two Badasses in one game !!! Your system will explode!!!Give me a break. And considering capcom fighting games being almost nonexistent nowadays this is refreshing news to hear. But I do have to reinforce for the past couple of years the fighting engine on the newer fighters like svc chaos and cvs 2 has been quite a dissapointment. ( I prefer the bone crunching sounds and visual effects from the alpha series to the flashy explosion effects when someone gets hit in the cvs series for instance, That was pretty lame in my opinion) But let's stay alert and see how capcom evolves in the next couple of months with these games and yes, I hope i don't get arthritis while waiting doe sf4.

i think bring out capcom snk 3 would be point less i think all versions of the game are crappy . capcom hasnt had a soild fighting game since marvel vs.capcom 2 ,and at the same point marvel has never had any blockbuster games with there charactrers ;only little kids have them cause there parents buy the marvel name . marvel needs to get off there ass and quit being greedy and let marvel vs capcom 3 happen , but a dc vs capcom would be just as great as long as it the same style as mvc 2 . can anyone show a game thats been out for almost ten years and is still in demand plus being sold to date ? street fighter 2 isnt even close .

SF vs DC is an intersting idea, but wut you Capcom ppl need to do is make Capcom Vs SNK 3. It's nice to try new games but it;s pretty clear that the game is in demand and therefore would be profitable. Capcom Vs SNK2 is the best fighting game i ever played.Im tired of all these re released street fighter games and crappy snk gameplay in their games. Make a fuckin Capcom Vs SNk 3 for the ps3, it's what really should be done.Clear up whatever legal problems their are and make the dam game. After a long wait like this, theres no reason to believe that the game won't sell well, especially after all the mediocore fighting games released by capcom and snk since. It's a win win situation for the company and the fans.

What fucking difference does it make if only 5 people are supirior to everyone else. This is the same with new games coming out, saying, OMG look at the graphics!!!! I hope capcom gets this shit right, and if they don't, fucking cancel the project.

interesting... even though im all for a new vs. game. I would personally love to see a new Capcom Vs. SNK than a DC Vs. Street Fighter.

I agree about the DC vs Capcom. That would be a better game than SF vs DC. More characters to choose from. And make it more like CVS fighing style than the Marvel one.

You said first off Capcom, but I don't see anything about the SNK. Where's it at?

This is fucking retarded. I understand Capcom wanting to do more than fighters, but I don't think anyone thought of them as being a "one-trick pony" before. They have always been known for great fighting and arcade style action games. They should stick to what they do best, and make up for the shitty Capcom vs. SNK 2:SVC Chaos by giving us Capcom vs. SNK 3, with even more playable characters and...oh yeah..FUCKING UPDATING THEIR SPRITES!! Come on guys! Seriously! At LEAST make them match up with the quality of the SNK characters. And didn't SNK close their doors, handing the rights over to Capcom!?! I must have missed something. Oh well, guess I'll just have to pop in Capcom Vs. Snk 2 again and daydream about a new version with every Darkstalkers, Samurai Showdown, Street Fighter, Last Blade, Rival Schools, and King of Fighters character available for me to choose from. Capcom can suck my dick. DC Vs. Street Fighter? Why not DC Vs. Capcom? What the fuck?
