Overview
Capcom is known to make a franchise, and stick to it until it is milked completely dry. Well, Capcom must have gotten tired of that, because one day, they decided to make this game. A game filled with so much humor and cuteness, it would make Pokemon blush. The question is, does the game have a lasting impression on those who play it? Well, you'll soon find out!
Graphics 10/10
This game has such cute graphics in it. Every character in this game(except for Zangief and Akuma) are cute, and their personalities just leap off the screen while you're playing. There aren't really any frames of animation missing, and the animation is really smooth. The moves have that cute look also, as evidenced by Sakura's FWD+S guard break in this game! The backgrounds are full of Capcom cameos and are well animated.
Gameplay/Controls 7.5/10
This game is full of moves, and it's fun..... for a while, at least. You see, the game has Flash Combos, a system where you start a combo with P, then push any combinations of punch or kick to make small combos. In an effort to make this aspect more fun, Capcom made it so that every character turned into another one of Capcom's characters in a combo. If it sounds confusing, you'll get what I'm talking about when you play the game.
The problem is, Flash Combos are pretty much an excuse to buttonmash. And you can get far in this game by just pushing Punch....a lot. Another problem with Flash Combos is that they're gimmicky at best.
Seeing Felicia turn into Megaman and megablasting the opponent then turning into Gamof IN THE SAME COMBO over and over gets pretty repetitive, and it's a bit cheap.
On the other hand, there is strategy, but in handfuls. There are Safe Falls and counters and things like that, but the game just doesn't feel like SF, or DS for that matter. Hell, there's not even block damage in the game, but that's only because of the Guard Break moves. More on that in the next part.
The Guard Break moves, done by pushing a direction plus the special button, are helpful, but can sometimes be a bit cheap if you're playing the CPU(which you shouldn't do in the first place). But the good thing is, they come out slowly, so they're pretty much fair moves, and you need to know the timing so that it hits.
There is an innovative feature in this game: the ability to power up your specials! The gems from Puzzle Fighter are in this game, and they are used to power up specials. Red powers up projectile specials, Yellow powers up anti-airs, and Blue powers up the Hurricane-Kick-type moves.
This greatly adds to the strategy, as it's kinda hard sometimes to power up all your specials to level three!
In summary, the game is fun when playing the CPU, but a lot more so if you're playing a human.
The Super Combo controls have been simplified, they can be done by doing a Hadoken/Shoryuken/Kikoken motion and Special. Of course, for those who think that is too cheap, you can do the moves the long way also. For example, Hsien-Ko's simplified motion for the Tenraiha is HCB+S. Well, it can also done P,P,K,S,U. Or the Shinryuken, which is DPB+S, could be done like a regular Shinryuken also.
The controls are Capcom-tight(TM) and they rarely spasm. I only messed up a Shoryuken ONCE of out 20 tries.
The gameplay controls are great, and they are responsive, but sometimes, like I said, they are too cheap. Certain moves are too easy to pull off.
Sound/Music 9/10
This game has the cutest music ever! And also the cutest sounds. From the instant you get to the title screen, and you hear the announcer scream "Poketto Faita!" you will fall in love with the sounds. The gameplay sounds are entertaining and pleasing to the ear. The sounds worthy of note, however, are the voices!
All the female characters in the game have such cute voice clips(especially Sakura and Morrigan), and more than likely you will scream, "Aw! How kewwwwwt!" at the voice clips. The only thing wrong with the sounds is that Ryu and Ken look like 6-year-olds in this game, yet they have deep-ass voices! Akuma, Dan, and Zangief sound the same as they did in SFA.
Replay Value 7/10
If you're not a Capcom fan, you.....might not like this game. It's full of Capcom cameos. Plus there ain't much to unlock. You can only "unlock" Dan and Gouki, and that's about it. Sure, there's an "Edit Fighter" mode, but it's a gimmick. You can't actually "edit" your fighter. And if you do, it doesn't make them more or less powerful than they already were.
For the avid Capcom fan, however, there are many cameos in the game. There's even cameos by Devilot of Cyberbots, and Ryu of BoF! Simply put, this game is really made for Capcom fans. If you're not a fan of Capcom, then there's not much this game can offer you.
Overall 7/10
There are some funny-ass stories in this game. And the good part is, none of them are predictable! These endings you just have to see to believe! Like the ending to Gouki's story. What's his story, you ask? Well, there was an amusement park built on the island where Gouki was training, so he just left to find a new place to train. Hsien-Ko shows him a place, but...it's... not really what you'd expect. These stories are creative and some of them were derived from SF and DS also....
Pros:
Cuteness
Originality
Sound
Cons:
Too many gimmicks
Edit Fighter is lame
Needs more unlockables
