Overview
This is the first game in the World Heroes series and came after the craze of Street Fighter 2. It is looked as a street fighter clone and for that it would never really get any respect. It’s the first 2d fighter to ever have a deathmatch mode, a grab button, and a double jump. It was the first of many things.
Graphics 8/10
Well, what can I say? The game has similar graphics to those of Street Fighter 2 and that’s not a bad thing. Graphics look nice for a game that came out in 1992. The character sprites looked good as did the stages. The stages looked good for a fighter of its time and for a 2d game. Also the characters designs are cool since most of the characters are made after historical people. Also the character animations are good for a old game. But why judge a 2D fighter for its graphics right?
Gameplay/Controls 8/10
The number one thing everyone looks for in a fighting game. Gameplay! Well, the game plays like a Street Fighter 2, but a bit slower. The game has three bottuns in total a punch button, a kick button, and a grab button. The games controls response fairly and moves are easy to pull off. One thing is for sure so that you could perform the upper cut move with both ninjas you have to do it exactly dp punch and not like in other fighters which this type of move was more freely to do. Thats about the only thing you anybody should have a problem trying to perform. Every other moves in the game come out easly. It did had some cool features others didn’t have. Like their very original “Deathmatch” mode, a grab button, and a double jump (For the two main ninjas). The Deathmatch is also a cool new addition to the game but Hanzou and Fumma have the advantage in this mode do to their grab which knocks a opponent to the far end of the screen and can get hit by the spikes or electricity depending on what stage they are in. The game has eight characters and one boss that can fairly compete in combat. Every fighting game has tiers, but what about this one? Well, from my gameplay experience, the best characters were Fumma cause of his air uppercut, and his throw (Which Hanzou had also). Also, Muscle power is one of the best to play for his special 360 degree move, the fact after a blocked hit or jump kick he can do that throw on his opponent. Kim Dragon was a great character, since his moves can go through almost anything. His Dragon Kick is insane and is cleverly design. As a whole, the gameplay seems balanced evenly.
Sound/Music 5/10
The sounds are pretty damn bad. Musically, the soundtrack sucks and the character voices are not that good. All the damn stages musically sucks. They like used the same damn voice actor for every damn character. Which sucks really bad. Well you can’t blame ADK as this was 1992 and were totally limited. Altogether, they aren’t that great and there are other 2D fighters at the time that had better quality.
Replay Value 6/10
With eight characters to choose from, it was fine. After seeing all eight individuals’ endings, the replay value goes down a lot. It’s always helps if you are playing with someone, but after a while this game can get boring due to not having as much depth as the other fighting games that try to mimic Street Fighter 2’s success.
Overall 6/10
World Heroes is still good for an old game. To be the first to have some gameplay features, made it distinguishable the other fighting knock offs. To me, it’s a classic and it is well balanced. Nowhere near better then the game it was trying to rival, Street Fighter 2, but still a good game to sit down and play with friends.
